Find brake fluid for your car at Carmedia24.dk. Brake fluid is a vital part of the car’s hydraulic braking system, transferring force from the brake pedal to the brakes. The right brake fluid helps ensure stable braking performance and must meet the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.

Brake fluid for safe, reliable braking

Brake fluid operates under high pressure and can be exposed to significant temperatures. That is why there are specific requirements for boiling point, viscosity and compatibility with the components of the braking system.

Most standard glycol-based brake fluids absorb moisture over time. Increasing water content can lower the boiling point and raise the risk of reduced braking performance under heavy use.

What is the difference between DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1?

DOT 3 brake fluid

DOT 3 is a glycol-based brake fluid used in braking systems where this specification is required. It has different minimum boiling point requirements than DOT 4 and DOT 5.1.

DOT 4 brake fluid

DOT 4 is used in many passenger cars and has higher minimum boiling point requirements than DOT 3. There are also special DOT 4 variants for braking systems with specific low-temperature viscosity requirements.

DOT 5.1 brake fluid

DOT 5.1 is a glycol-based brake fluid with high minimum boiling point requirements and specific viscosity requirements. It must not be confused with DOT 5, which is silicone-based and has different properties.

Can you mix different types of brake fluid?

Although certain glycol-based DOT fluids can technically be mixed, that does not mean they will still meet the car’s requirements after mixing. Always use the brake fluid specified by the vehicle manufacturer. DOT 5 must not be mixed with glycol-based DOT 3, DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 fluids.

When should brake fluid be changed?

Many car manufacturers recommend replacing brake fluid regularly, often around every two years, but the interval varies. Always follow the vehicle’s service schedule.

If you notice a soft brake pedal, visible leaks or warnings from the braking system, the vehicle should be inspected by a professional. Work on the braking system requires the correct procedure and a follow-up check.

How to choose the right brake fluid

  • Check the vehicle manufacturer’s DOT specification.
  • Review any additional requirements for viscosity and approvals.
  • Use brake fluid from a properly sealed container.
  • Avoid contamination with water, oil or other fluids.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for replacement and bleeding.
